A study has recently been carried out to improve a drinking water station in Berguedà, in collaboration with Nordic Water, Dryden Aqua, Calplas and Puig-Reig City Council. This study, which lasted 2 months, consisted of the installation of a pilot plant with AFM® activated glass filter to make water potable in a Dynasand® continuous washing filter.
The pilot plant includes a continuous washing filter with a 0.7 m2 filtering surface, and AFM® DIN-type activated glass filtering medium with a grain size of 0.7 – 1.2 mm. During the filtration test, the velocities have remained between 7 and 12.5 m3/m2·h.
The main objective of the test was to confirm the performance of the AFM as a filter medium and it has been found that the AFM® filter medium offers better filtered water quality compared to silex media in continuous washing filters. The analyzes have marked a water turbidity of less than 0.3 NTU continuously, without having dosed coagulant or used decantation. In addition, water consumption has not increased and has been kept to a minimum, since, due to the bacteriostatic characteristics of the environment, biofouling has not occurred.
